Veterinary Insecticide-Acaricide
Only for veterinary use
Composition
Deltanil Pour-on Solution is a clear, oily solution with a slight yellowish color containing 10 mg of deltamethrin per ml.
Pharmacological Properties
Pharmacodynamic Properties
Deltamethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid with insecticidal and acaricidal effects. It is a member of a wide family of pyrethroid esters developed as synthetic analogs of natural insecticidal extracts isolated from pyrethrum flowers. Deltamethrin belongs to the alpha-cyano pyrethroid group and is considered a second-generation pyrethroid.
In second-generation pyrethroids, the overall stability of the molecule to photo- and biodegradation is enhanced, and the insecticidal effect is strengthened. Due to slower metabolism, it exhibits higher toxicity against insects and mites.
While the exact mechanism of the insecticidal action of pyrethroids is not fully understood, it is believed that they cause strong neurotoxic effects in insects, leading to sensory coordination disorders, irregular motor activity, and ultimately death. In mammals, pyrethroids are rapidly metabolized through oxidative and neurotoxic pathways, meaning that neurotoxic effects only appear at doses well above those required for ectoparasitic effect.
Two primary physiological mechanisms may play a role in the development of resistance to deltamethrin: mutations in the target molecule or inactivation via metabolic enzymes, specifically glutathione-S-transferase.
Pharmacokinetic Properties
Following dermal application, deltamethrin is slowly absorbed through the skin of cattle and sheep. Pyrethroids are metabolized via oxidative and neurotoxic pathways. The main route of elimination for absorbed amounts in target animals is through feces.
Indications / Uses
For regional application:
• In cattle: Treatment and prevention of infestations caused by lice and flies.
• In sheep: Treatment and prevention of infestations caused by ticks, lice, sheep ked, and blowflies.
• In lambs: Treatment and prevention of infestations caused by lice and ticks.
In Cattle
Effective against both biting and blood-sucking lice infestations (including Bovicola bovis, Solenopotes capillatus, Linognathus vituli, and Haematopinus eurysternus), and for control of fly infestations caused by Haematobia irritans, Stomoxys calcitrans, Musca species, and Hydrotaea irritans.
In Sheep
Effective against tick infestations (Ixodes ricinus), lice infestations (Linognathus ovillus, Bovicola ovis), sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus), and blowfly infestations (usually Lucilia spp.).
In Lambs
Used to treat and prevent tick (Ixodes ricinus) and lice (Bovicola ovis) infestations.
Dosage and Administration
For external use only. Apply by pour-on method to the skin.
• For cattle: Apply 10 ml of product (equivalent to 100 mg deltamethrin) per animal.
• For sheep: Apply 5 ml of product (equivalent to 50 mg deltamethrin) per animal.
• For lambs (less than 10 kg body weight or less than 1 month old): Apply 2.5 ml of product (equivalent to 25 mg deltamethrin) per animal.
